About Us

Sprout Patterns is a new service that offers public indie sewing patterns that you combine with Spoonflower designs to create customized cut and sew projects. Each project is digitally printed by Spoonflower at their Durham, NC headquarters. We take out all the work of putting a sewing pattern onto fabric and leave you with the fun of creating garments and accessories.

Simply put, just choose your sewing pattern from our curated collection, then fill it with your design of choice from Spoonflower's marketplace. Select your size and type of fabric, and we do all the rest! You will receive a package that includes a digitally printed custom sewing pattern, instructions and the original PDF pattern with all sizes.

Cut and sew at home

Typically when you want to sew a garment you purchased online, you need to download a PDF of the pattern, print it out, tape the pieces together (making sure everything is aligned) cut out your size, and trace it to fabric while paying attention to the number of pieces needed and direction to be placed. This is all before you even begin to cut out the fabric! Sprout removes these tedious steps, making it fast and easy to sew an entirely custom sewing project.

Sprout Patterns started as an idea among the first employees at Spoonflower who asked the question — “What if we could print out exact pattern pieces with the surface design we choose on the fabric we want?” After some creative computer magic, an entire circus ensemble was created out of digitally printed sewing patterns for the yearly Halloween costume competition.

The Spoonflower Halloween Crew

It didn't stop at Halloween. This idea grew into a new company, a new division and “offshoot” of Spoonflower that empowers indie pattern makers and sewists in the same way that Spoonflower empowers the textile design community. Sprout Patterns provides a platform that spotlights our favorite pattern makers while encouraging creativity from the maker community and their desire to fight fast fashion.

This is Sprout Patterns.
This is cut and sew for the modern world.

Meet the Sprout Team

  • Photo of Caroline

    Creative Director

Caroline is Sprout's Creative Director. Having studied both art and psychology, she is especially fascinated at the ways that color and design impact our everyday lives. In her spare time she is a dedicated volunteer and adoption counselor at her local animal shelter, a vigilant amateur chef, and like a kid in a candy shop with her sewing machine. She is very excited to be working to bring together indie pattern makers and Spoonflower designers into a flurry of creative expression.

  • Photo of Eloisa

Eloisa is a brilliant sewist coming from a family line of professional dressmakers going back to the early 1900s. Like her mother, she first learned to sew at home. She started with small hemming projects, and progressed to fabricating beautiful and unique pageant gowns for her and her sisters. Eloisa enjoys the company of her family and her ever-growing collection of pets. If you visit her, you will find about 6 friendly dogs, bunnies, guinea pigs, and of course, hens and roosters.

    Full Stack Developer

Katie is an artist and a junior Rails developer. Learning to code has been a recent adventure for her, and now she is rather fond of discussing data table structure and the test suite. With a background in sculpture and costuming, if she isn’t sewing, she’s building dovetail boxes in the wood shop. Since she joined the Sprout team, her collection of handmade clothes featuring baby goat themed designs has grown exponentially, much to her delight. She also loves hiking, contra dancing, Iyengar yoga, and mindfulness meditation.

    Product Development Manager

Nicole is our Product Development Manager. She has a background in fashion development and design and a passion for businesses that do good, which has taken her to places like Uganda, Pakistan, and now Durham, NC. She is thrilled to be working to empower indie pattern makers through Sprout! In her spare time, you can either find Nicole in her home studio creating with her kitten by her side or exploring new places around town and abroad. She loves live music, Asian cuisine, and laughing.

    Front End Developer

Todd is a junior Front End developer. With career experience in financial services, sales, and marketing, Todd is still green in the field of web development and loving the challenge of learning new things every day. In addition to development, Todd took on learning to sew with a Sprout Patterns project since joining the team. He enjoys tackling DIY projects around the house, escaping to the beach and mountains, spending time with his lovely wife and crazy young sons, and meeting with his local church.

  • Photo of Turner

    Back End Developer

Turner is a junior Back End developer, aka Padawan dark wizard in training. You likely haven't seen any of his work, but if something doesn't load, save, or redirect properly it's probably his fault. In his spare time he enjoys reading and watching a myriad of science fiction works, playing video games and generally nerding out. He also enjoys writing music and singing loud enough to wake the neighbors.
