Alder is a loosely fitted sleeveless shirt dress with two options. View A falls into an A-Line at the waist and features a curved hem, bust darts and two breast pockets. View B features the same bodice as View A but with a gathered skirt at the sides and back of the garment resulting in an incredibly flattering and fun silhouette.
Techniques involved include sewing a straight seam, bust darts, bias facing armholes, adding a shirt collar, gathering, and buttons & buttonholes.

So far, this is my favorite sprout project yet! I love shirt dresses, and so I wanted to sew the Alder, and decided to use the cotton lawn fabric. Its soft and drapey, but has enough weight to hold up on its own.
The pattern was easy, with great instructions, and a good fit. But I'm a bit of a classic pear shape. So I added some darts under the bust in the front, and mid-back for a better shape. I also put the patch pockets down below on the skirt, just for fun.
The pattern was so simple, it was easy to modify, and I love the fit that gave me.
But something was still missing... With such an "architectural" design, I wanted a bit more structure, shape. I realized that even with Sprout, I still had all this lovely printed scrap fabric. And what this dress was calling out for was SLEEVES! So I mocked up some simple short sleeves out of the scrap, and it worked!
This simple change was actually really easy, and I believe it totally changed the character of the dress. Don't let anyone tell you you can't modify sprout pattern projects! It is absolutely possible to tailor them and change them if you get creative about it.

This dress was fun and easy to sew, and looks great. I got a ton of compliments on it when I wore it to work. I used the poly crepe de chine, and the fabric drapes just beautifully.
The collar has a really nice construction, and was easy to do. I like the button band, and especially the back yoke.
I modified the dress slightly and added under-bust darts, and back darts to give the dress slightly more shape and structure, as I'm just not quite the body shape that looks good in such straight lines.
Definitely a winning pattern!
